NW Fjords. Act 1: A never ending Sunset, Northern Lights and Artic Foxes

After leaving Dettifoss in the North eastern section of Iceland (close to Myvatn), it seemed like we drove into a never ending sunset to get to our planned stop for the night in the NW Fjords. I’ll be honest, I highly enjoyed that evening/night drive that went on forever. We stopped in Akureyri to stretch the legs and grab some delicious pizza to go.

Further along, we found ourselves traveling on a dirt road. A Fjord was to our right and we were well into the midnight hour when Bruce ( whom was driving) asked “what’s that”? We all looked across the Fjord only to see the night sky light up green from the Northern Lights. The sky was overcast, but the Northern Lights were strong enough to shine through. We stopped and soaked in the scene for some time. Wonderful.

We finally arrived at the campground in Holmavik only to continue watching the Northern Lights. Think we finally got to bed around 2am. The rest of the trip would be filled with wonderful drives around the NW Fjords, random Artic Horses and a stop at the Arctic Fox Center.

Chasing that what seemed to be never ending sunset.

We stopped quit a few times to take in the views:).

Along a dirt road and some fjord, soaking in the Northern Lights. Wish I was better at photographing them.

Northern Lights in Homavik from our campground.

A stop at the Arctic Fox Center in Sudavik.

Arctic Fox’s.

Further along, we stopped at a random side road for lunch and to stretch the legs. Came across these Arctic Horses.

Bolungarvik

Spotted an old FJ55 Land Cruiser along the dirt road as well that was parked on a trailer. Seemed I was the only one excited about this….
