After the Killpecker Sand Dunes, we continued our trek NW. Outside of South Pass City, we meet up with our pals Kurt and Scott from Salt Lake. We spent a bit of time exploring the Oregon Buttes, a dominant land mark used by travelers on the Oregon Trail. After checking out the buttes, we continued on, following along an old historic road. While following that route, we ended up on some private land. The owner, who at first wasn’t happy, ended up directing us to Atlantic City and the Grubstake Saloon.
After finding camp just outside of town, we headed back to Atlantic City for a few beers at the Grubstake. It was definitely a night to remember. The next morning, after some fine corn beef and hash in town, we headed out for Miners Delight. A cool old mining town, with lots of well preserved buildings to check out. Gold was discovered in 1868. Miners Delight saw a few mining booms during it’s day and inhabited as late as 1960’s.
After Miners Delight, we continued NW. Passing through some great country before ending the day at Castle Gardens. We had Castle Gardens to ourselves. Spending some time checking out the rock art before settling in around camp for the night.
Fine views of the Red Desert.
A great camp against the Aspens on Steamboat Mountain.
Another fine night around the fire, even with the snow setting in.
Woke to a foggy morning.
Continuing North (ish) we followed a two track for a few miles. A perfect drive to start the morning. Cruising along at 40 mph, an Elk came running up next to me, then running away a few minutes later. Pure awesome:).
Just outside of South Pass City we meet up with our pals Kurt and Scott from Utah. We explored the Oregon Buttes for a bit before continuing along an old historic road. Sadly, the historic road crossed private land, and the owner wasn’t too keen about us following along the old historic route. But after things calmed down, he ended up telling us about Atlantic City, and recommended the local pub.
Wandering around the Oregon Buttes.
Some great views.
Making our way to Atlantic City.
Coming into camp just outside of Atlantic City. After getting settled, we headed over to the Miners Grubstake for a few beers. A fun night indeed.
A frosty morning.
Miners Delight. We spent some time checking out the old mining town.
Kurt takes a nap.
Scott goes for a ride.
Loved this old post belly stove.

Castle Gardens. A rock art site believed to be by the Athabaskans, around 10000 to 1250AD.
Another evening sets in:).
