Outlaws Run 2021. Act 2: Dutch Oven Pass, a fine camp in the woods and some time around Alma

We left Pie Town and headed South via Dutch Oven Pass. A most beautiful drive, though the road passed through private property for the whole route. Back on pavement, we continued Southwest with a unplanned stop in Reserve, NM as Matt Farr’s Master Cylinder gave out in his 80 series Land Cruiser. The local shop had Matt’s part on order, with a planned deliver the next day. With that knowledge, we set out to find a camp in the Gila outside of town. After a little bit of exploring, we came upon one of our better camps for the week.

After a lazy morning, we broke camp and headed back to Reserve- with some of the group taking the scenic way South to Alma. Back in Reserve, Matt, Corbett Daniel Linn and I checked into the local shop. They’d only need a few hours to replace the Master Cylinder. One of the locals informed us about a Rock Art panel not to far out of town to check out. A short but fun hike led us to some great Rock Art along with a bridge that had been washed down river from a recent flash flood.

Back in town, we picked up Matt’s 80 then headed South towards Alma, NM. Meeting up with the rest of the gang that found a spot with some great views. A fine sunset with wonderful views looking West to Arizona before settling in around the campfire.

The Gila’s a wonderful place, that we’ve only just begun to explore.

Full group shot at Pie Town. Note: There closed on Tuesdays.

Dutch Oven Pass.

Exploring the Gila National Forest outside Reserve, NM. Some great Forests and probably one our better camps.

Had a nice afternoon shower as we got to camp.

Around camp.

A fine camp.

Loved this old tree and barbed wire.

A nice sunset through the trees.

A most enjoyable night.

Walked around camp for a while the next morning enjoying the forest and the light.

After a lazy morning, we broke camp and headed back to Reserve NM. My pal Matt needed to drop of his 80 series Land Cruiser to get the Master Cylinder Replaced.

After dropping Matts 80 Series off at the shop in Reserve (they only needed a few hours to get the work done) we headed out for a short hike to some rock art- recommended by one of the locals.

Near the end of the hike, we came across this foot bridge that had been washed down stream by flash floods. Can only imagine the amount of water/force it took to move that thing.

Rock Art.

Taking in the views. Love the Gila.

A fine camp outside Alma, NM.
