After we left Fritch, Texas, we set out to find camp for the night. Martin already had some good intel on places to stay for the night since he got out a few days before us. We ended up on the southwest side of Lake Meredith, and after some time exploring the area, we stumbled upon a camp tucked away in the trees off a remote two track dirt road. The evening around the campfire was perfect, staying up well into the night. The next morning, we’d wake to weather setting in. By the time we got to Amarillo for lunch, it was snowing. After lunch, we decided to get a Airbnb for the night and hit the town later. No sooner had we got settled in, some of the local Land Cruiser community started stopping by. With a few joining us for dinner before we hit the town. The next morning, we made a quick drive south to check out Palo Duro Canyon State Park (busy on a Saturday!) before heading North into New Mexico via a remote crossing. Our last camp was outside Springer, New Mexico, just outside of town.
It was fun to explore a new state and see some new country. Hole in the Rock will have to wait for another time.
Exploring a nice dirt two track on the southwest side of Lake Meredith. This would lead us to a nice remote camp tucked away in the trees. Giving us a break from the wind.
A fine sunset!
Was a nice camp tucked away in the trees.
Evening vistas.
A fine camp indeed:)!
Morning light from camp. Weather would settle in shortly after we left.
From camp we made our way South to Amarillo. With the weather setting in for the day, we ended up getting a AirBnB for the night then set out to check out the town. Some of the local Toyota heads spotted us and joined us for dinner. A fun evening! It ended up snowing lightly that afternoon while we were in Amarillo.
Loaded up in Tim’s 200 series to go check out the town.
The next day we stopped to check out Cadillac Ranch.
Of course we had to leave our mark:).
So many layers of paint.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Was a busy place on a Saturday. Definitely a beautiful spot. We enjoyed a drive through the canyon before starting the trek North.
My pal Tim and his nicely built 200 series.
We took a back route to get us North and into New Mexico to help break up the drive. I was hoping we would end up at Mill Canyon for the night as it’s been a while since i’ve last stayed there, but with gas stations non existent, we ended up at a small lake outside Springer, NM.
We stopped to enjoy this remote Texas/New Mexico crossing.
Enter New Mexico.
At least my pal Matt understood when I yelled Abbey Road….
A fine New Mexico Sunset as we dropped down into Wagon Mound. Definitely the furthest I’ve pushed the 4runner’s gas tank.
After a nice camp outside Springer, NM, I got up early, packed the 4runner and headed North for home. Had to pull over just South of Raton, NM to enjoy this fine Sunrise.
End.
