After another fine night sleeping outside, we packed up and got the day going. My pal Matt had to bug out before the rest of us in order to get back to Moab to meet up with family. We headed out with the plan/hopes of taking the main road out of Beef Basin. On our way out we crossed Beef Basin Wash and boy was it flowing with water! Probably the most water I have seen in Beef Basin to date. It seemed like most of the other washes were flowing high with water as well with the Spring run off. Not to much further, Matt radioed back to us that he had reached snow line and was actually stuck in snow. So a few of us drove up close enough to make sure he would get out ok. Matt was about a mile from the turn off to drop down into Beef Basin.
Once Matt was back on the road, we headed back down into Beef Basin. After a short stop, Matt continued on ahead of us (pushing hard to get back over E-Hill and back into Moab in time to meet family), the rest of us continued on at a more mellow pace. So it was back through Bobby’s Hole and over S.O.B and E-Hill’s. The drive back through Bobby’s Hole was amazing, fantastic views of the Needles District and the La Sal Mountains. The plus side of going back over S.O.B Hill and E-Hill, we got to finish driving the whole Elephant Hill Trail loop, something I haven’t done in quiet a few years. Back at the Canyonlands visitor center, we aired up and headed out to find camp for the night. After some time exploring the roads in Hertz Draw, Tim found a great spot overlooking the Abajo’s. Though down to a skeleton crew, Shawn cooked another fine meal ( with some help from Tim) and we settled in for another night around the campfire. After a few beers I found myself crawling into my sleeping bag. Felt good to have an early night.
The next morning, we headed back to Moab.
Beef Basin has become one of my happy places:).
With how much snow Utah got this past winter, the washes in Beef Basin were flowing with Spring runoff. Never have seen so much water in Beef Basin.
So much water! Beef Basin Wash was flowing!
Matt Farr managed to get about a mile to the turn off for the main way into Beef Basin before getting stuck in Snow. Marco waited here to make sure Matt got out ok. Unfortunately, this would mean back tracking for us, though we were still having a blast.
Some fine views as you drop down into Beef Basin!
Last views of my beloved Henry’s as we make out way out of Beef Basin.
Back into Canyonlands:).
The drive through Bobby’s Hole to Beef Basin was amazing. the drive through Bobby’s Hole to Canyonlands was spectacular!
Some fantastic views of the Needles District and the La Sal mountains.
Marco got a little hung up trying to drive over S.O.B Hill with out backing over.
After getting Marco unstuck the group made short work of S.O.B Hill.
Shawn on the Devils Staircase.
Climbing back over E-Hill. Pull forward, back up
Making the last climb to the top of E-Hill. From here a few short switch backs and back to the parking lot.
After leaving Canyonlands, we set about searching for camp in Hertz Draw. Think this might of been most of the groups first time exploring the area. We spent a bit of time exploring some of the side roads. Tim finally finding a great spot for the night. Didn’t get many pics from camp that night. After another fine meal from Shawn, some time around the campfire, I settled in early for the night. Was definitely needed!
Enjoying a morning stroll around camp. Fine views of the Abajo’s!
