Cruise Moab 2014. Act 1: April Action Car Show, A night in Beef Basin and a failed attempt into Fable Valley

After enjoying the April Action Car Show, I headed south to meet my pal Martin. To kick off the week, we headed South into the desert with the goal of spending some time back in Fable Valley. Unfortunately with the recent moisture, we ended up turning back as roads were a bit too muddy. We did manage to spend another night in Beef Basin, exploring some new areas for both of us. After turning around while heading to Fable Valley, we headed back out to the highway and decided on where to head next.

Always fun to go check out the hot rods as they cruise up and down Main Street the nights before and after the April Action Car Show in City Park.

April Action Car Show 2014. The show fills up City Park in Moab. There was a bit of weather during the 2014 show.

After the car show, I headed South to meat up with my pal Martin. Of course a little bit of exploring along the way:).

Will come back to this spot later.

Just out exploring some roads near the intersection for highways 211 & 191.

Definitely some moody skies as I waited for Martin.

Moab looked like they were getting hit hard with weather!

After Martin arrived, we headed towards the Needles overlook to find camp for the night.

Enjoying the sunrise before we headed out for the day.

Lots of fresh snow outside Monticello!

Always fun to stop at Newspaper Rock while heading into Canyonlands.

After a short drive on highway 211, Martin and I turned off on a dirt road, aired down the tires and continued our trek South. Further into the desert.

Always a beautiful drive.

Stopped to take in the views for Sweet Alice Hills. One Day I’ll get down in there.

Further still into the desert. With all the moisture the area had gotten recently, the roads were a bit muddy and so was Skelatore- my 1st gen Toyota 4runner.

Some always fine views!

As we got closer to Fable Valley, we decided to drop down into Beef Basin for the night and start early the next day to hopefully finish the drive to Fable Valley

Once down in Beef Basin, Martin and I of course did a bit of exploring. At the end of one side road, we came across this old cabin. Camping not too far from it.

After setting up camp, Martin and I headed out on foot to explore more of this area. The weather actually turned nice while we were out hiking around on the slickroack.

Looking down on camp.

Looking back toward the main road into Beef Basin.

Waterpockets.

Spotted an alcove so we headed to it.

OLD corn cobs. Anasazi.

Checking out the alcove. If there was some ruins here, there now under a big pile of rocks.

A great afternoon to be out wanderin’ around:).

Back at camp with a fire going.

Evening and a bit of weather sets in.

Woke up to a beautiful morning. Hopes were high for getting back to Fable Valley.

Hard to beat Canyon Country!

Spotted some Turkey tracks and later would see on along the road.

Back into the snow and higher elevation.

Some more fine vistas.

To get to Fable Valley from here, we’d have to descend a bit in elevation.

The point were Marin and I called it. Martin’s tires were a bit worn and with the possibility for more weather, we decided to no risk it.

Back on flat road. Here we headed off for other parts of the desert.
