I have been wanting to ride the Cog Railway for quite some time. Finally got the chance to do so in May. Went down to the Broadmoor for a weekend. Knowing I had a free day on Friday, I purchased a reserved seat for the train ride. Though different then what I’ve used to been riding for trains (steam), It was a great day and train ride. Anschutz’s investment into the railroad after buying the Broadmoor can be seen with multiple new cars and significant track improvement. For the day I rode, I managed to get on one of the new cars and engine. Almost felt like I was riding on the A Line out to DIA. Yet, most of the time we were along the side of a 14k ft mountain. The views were spectacular. And found myself thinking back to the last time I was at the top of Pikes Peak ( high School?).
Definitely a fun day!
At the Depot in Manitou Springs waiting to board the train. Was riding the noon train and ended up on one of the newer trains.
Our conductor for the day welcoming us on board.
Minihaha Falls. Higher the Niagara Falls- they waited till after we passed to include the part about the actual elevation:).
One of the older cars passing on the downhill ciding.
Coming up on Inspiration Point.
Higher and higher up in elevation.
First batch of snow for the ride. Apparently they just got the route fully open the week before I rode.
Views from Windy Point.
Windy Point.
The last few climbs before the summit.
Continental Divide in the distance.
At the top of Pikes Peak (14,115ft). Overlooking Colorado Springs.
Pikes Peak Summit. End of the line for the Cog Railway.
Parts of Cripple Creek and the Continental Divide in the distance.
Checking out the new visitor center.
Still lots of snow in May at the top of Pikes Peak.
Some last views before getting back on the train.
Looking back at the visitor center from the train as we head back down.
Of course a visit and a night or two at the Broadmoor when riding the train is a must:).
